The Weekend That Changed How I Work
A few years ago, I booked a small cabin because a personal writing project had been sitting unfinished for almost a year.
I packed far too much: notebooks, books, chargers, snacks, and a few creative supplies I barely touched.
What surprised me was how quickly the work moved once the usual noise disappeared. No errands, no small household jobs, no constant switching between things.
I finished more in that weekend than I had managed in weeks.
That stayed with me.
Not the cabin itself, but the idea that the space around us can change how well we think and create.
I’m Julian Foster, and that idea became the starting point for Retreat & Create.
Most Ideas Need More Room, Not More Pressure
I live in Asheville, North Carolina, and work as an Editorial Project Manager for a small independent publishing company.
I studied English and Publishing, and my work now revolves around drafts, writers, designers, schedules, revisions, and helping creative projects make it from a rough beginning to something finished.
Over time, I noticed that good ideas are rarely the problem.
Finding enough uninterrupted attention to do something with them is harder.
That is why I became interested in the tools and environments around creative work.
A notebook can look beautiful and still be awkward to use. A work bag can hold everything and still be uncomfortable. A desk accessory can promise organization while quietly creating more clutter.
I care more about what remains useful after the novelty disappears.
My Own Setup Is Never Quite Finished
I spend plenty of time around books and publishing, but I like having interests that pull me away from a screen.
I browse secondhand bookshops, make the occasional linocut print, collect postcards I almost never send, and take short train trips whenever I can justify one.
I also have an old canvas bag that has been repaired enough times that replacing it would probably make more sense.
I keep using it anyway.
That habit probably explains how I look at most products: I like things that settle naturally into life instead of constantly asking for attention.
Why Retreat & Create Exists
Retreat & Create is for people who write, draw, design, plan, study, build, or simply need a calmer way to focus.
I cover notebooks, work bags, creative tools, portable tech, desk accessories, lighting, organization, travel-friendly gear, and other products that can make focused work easier or more comfortable.
But I do not think every creative problem needs another purchase.
Sometimes the right tool helps.
Sometimes the better answer is fewer distractions.
And sometimes you just need a quiet afternoon and enough room to think.
That is the kind of balance I want this site to explore.
